Katherine Demby currently serves as Chief of Staff with the New York State Senate, bringing her legal expertise and diverse professional background to public service. A Yale Law School graduate and accomplished writer, she has dedicated herself to progressive advocacy and public service.
Born and raised in North Carolina, Katherine attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she completed a double major in Political Science and History. Following graduation, she joined Teach for America, embarking on a meaningful career in education before attending Yale Law School.
At Yale, she led a number of student groups including the Yale Law Civil Rights Project, the Graduate and Professional Student Senate, and the Yale Law Alliance for Diversity. She was also the Director of the 2016 Yale Law School Critical Race Theory Conference, which had over 130 attendees.
After Law School, she pursued a career in writing and political advocacy, working on several progressive New York City campaigns while also pursuing a career in nonfiction writing. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including Prism Reports, Scalawag Magazine, Lux Magazine, and the Hartford Courant. She joined the New York State Senate in 2023 as a Communications Director.
Her background in writing and education, combined with her legal expertise, uniquely positioned her for her current role in the New York State Senate. As Chief of Staff, Katherine brings together her diverse experiences in education, law, and public service to serve working-class New Yorkers and manage a team of talented professionals with expertise in legislation, communications, and constituent services.
Outside of her professional life, Katherine is an avid ceramicist who continually explores new creative outlets. Her artistic interests have expanded to include gardening, sewing, and collage art, reflecting her passion for hands-on creativity and continuous learning.
